With fall here and winter around the corner, it is critical to prevent new weather patterns from threatening your employees’ safety. The first step is to recognize the signs of potentially harmful conditions.
Here’s everything you need to know about seasonal construction safety from your partners at STC:
The Safety of Employees During Rainy Season
Fall has one of the highest levels of precipitation of any season. Not only is it hurricane season, resulting in high volumes of rain and scattered storms, but it is also filled with several rainy period throughout the season. This added layer of moisture can affect the safety of employees due to a higher chance of accidents and the possibility of damaged materials.
The Cold Winter Can Affect Construction Safety
As temperatures continue to drop, conditions at construction sites continue to present more dangers. Cold temperatures, especially those below freezing, can cause a variety of health issues for employees who are exposed for long periods of time. Prolonged exposure to the cold can cause a higher chance of heart attacks, windburn, wheezing and shortness of breath.
Weather Conditions Can Change in an Instant
While the weather conditions change due to the season, the new season can also cause them to change more quickly throughout the day than most weather stations can predict. It is essential that you provide employees with shelter or overhead protection for inclement weather. These shelters can also prove beneficial for protecting expensive equipment.
Staying prepared
Now’s the time to start thinking about any weather-related supplies you might need to secure your sites over the coming months. It is also helpful to consider how supply delivery lead times might be affected by quickly changing weather.
Your preparation and commitment to exceptional safety standards have helped us set an industry-leading example for the world to see. As the weather gets colder and harsher, that commitment will be more vital than ever.
We are proud to recognize Foreman Damon Arapkiles and his exceptional crew for their outstanding performance at the Ward’s Island Digestor Tank Rehabilitation Project.
The team recently achieved a major milestone by successfully completing the second of six tanks slated for rehabilitation. Their work-which included the installation of a five-tier supported scaffold system, the removal of an existing coating system, concrete repair, meticulous surface preparation and the application of a new, specialized coating system – was all performed in a confined space.
However, what truly sets Damon’s crew apart is their unwavering commitment to safety.
All team members underwent extensive training in emergency evacuation and rescue procedures – and have gone several consecutive months without any incidents.
Their impeccable safety record – combined with their technical expertise and extraordinary teamwork – is a true testament to the standards we strive to set every day at Champion.
We thank Damon and his crew for their hard work, professionalism and focus. And congratulate them on demonstrating the leadership, skill and dedication it takes to deliver quality work while ensuring the well-being of every team member.
Congratulations to Foreman Damon Arapkiles and his crew! Keep up the great work!
